Tijuana, in the northwestern state of Baja California, is the national center of the maquiladora industry. Tijuana is Mexico's fourth largest city with over 2 million people.

Currently there are more than 1,000 foreign companies from Korea, Japan, and the USA with manufacturing plants in Tijuana.

Although employment at the maquiladoras has subsided considerably due in part to the recent slowing global economy, Tijuana is still a magnet for migration from the poorer southern states that have little job creation.
